What is a NRTL?

A NRTL or National Recognized Testing Laboratory, is an independent testing laboratory that is recognized by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).

What is the purpose of a NRTL?

The NRTL purpose is to test and certify products to safety specifications that correlate to the current applicable standards. These include those from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Underwriters Laboratory (UL).

Which products need to be tested and certified?

All EE products used in the workplace must be tested and certified by a NRTL before they can be sold on the market. Many US and Canadian retailers also require products to be tested and certified before they will sell it on their shelves.

Must testing be done in the United States?

No, testing can be carried out in any qualified laboratory. SGS has over 20 laboratories worldwide that perform testing on EE products. Our state-of-the-art laboratories are located in Atlanta, USA, we also have four in China, six in Europe, and numerous other global locations.
